The Energy Conservation Act from 2001 was amended with the Energy Conservation (Amendment) Act - decided in 2022 and coming into force in 2023. It regulates the energy use of appliances, vehicles, equipment, industrial units, and buildings, among others.
Most centrally, it supports the establishment of the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, empowers the government to set minimum shares of non-fossil sources in energy consumption, revises rules for building codes and standards for vehicles, and enables the set-up of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
