The Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA) of the EU was published in the Official Journal of the EU on June 28, 2024, and entered into force on June 29, 2024, aiming to boost the competitiveness of EU industry and technologies crucial for decarbonization. By 2030, the EU seeks to ensure that at least 40% of its annual demand for net-zero technologies is met through domestic production. Looking ahead to 2040, the EU aspires to reach a 15% share of global production in this sector. Additionally, by 2030, the goal is to develop an annual carbon storage capacity of at least 50 million tonnes CO2 across the Union. The NZIA’s main economic instrument is making it easier for clean technology projects to access funding and win public contracts by streamlining permits and requiring sustainability criteria in government purchases.
